Brow & Forehead

Most everyone has heard of Botox and injectable fillers, as the quest to retain the smooth and supple skin of youth becomes more and more mainstream. In fact, Botox has consistently stayed at the top of the list of popular nonsurgical procedures for several years – in fact, in 2017 alone, more than 1.5 million people chose Botox to address signs of aging. Injectable fillers have also increased in popularity, jumping 40 percent over the past five years. Types of Forehead Lines

Forehead lines tend to be some of the first to show up on your face, either vertically between your eyebrows or horizontally across your forehead. The lines between your brows are called “glabellar lines” or “elevens,” and can be one or two vertical lines that form when the lower forehead muscles contract downward, resulting in a crease in the area between the brows. They are often referred to as “frown lines,” since frowning makes their appearance more noticeable. The horizontal lines across your forehead are “forehead rows,” and are found stacked above your eyebrows, especially if you frequently raise your eyebrows. Without treatment, both glabellar lines and forehead rows will become more prevalent as you age, partly because of the near-constant muscle use and partly because of the skin’s inability to bounce back (due to loss of elasticity).

While they may look identical, the wrinkles on your face fall into two primary categories: active and passive. Passive wrinkles form due to genetics or environment, such as dehydration, thin skin, sun damage and smoking – just to name a few. These factors combine with the natural breakdown of your skin’s collagen and elastin over time, leaving you with varying degrees of fine lines and wrinkles. Active wrinkles form due to repetitive use of your facial muscles, appearing in the places on your face where you use your facial muscles all day, every day – even if you don’t notice. Both types of forehead lines are known as active, or dynamic wrinkles. Frowning, looking surprised or concentrating cause your forehead muscles to contract, making your skin fold over and furrow. Eventually, this constant use coupled with the decrease in collagen and elastin can leave you with deeply etched lines in your face that cause you to look perpetually tired or angry.

Preventing and Treating Forehead Wrinkles

Unfortunately, because forehead wrinkles are caused by dynamic movement, the only way to prevent them is by never moving your facial muscles. Obviously, that’s not a realistic solution, but there are ways you can keep wrinkles from becoming deeper and more visible over time.
