Restylane® FAQs

  • 01.What Does Restylane® Do?

Restylane® is a family of dermal filler products that uses a hyaluronic acid formulation to fill and smooth the skin and reduce the signs of aging.

Like the natural hyaluronic acid that the body produces, Restylane® binds to water molecules within the body to create volume and lift in targeted areas of the face that can sag or wrinkle over time.

  • 02.Is Restylane® Better Than Juvéderm®?

Restylane® and Juvéderm® are injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that patients can apply to various areas of the face to help smooth wrinkles and restore volume.

Each treatment has its advantages. For example, Restylane® application is easier to control and use for more precise contouring and deeper creases. However, Juvéderm® applications, especially in the cheeks, last much longer — sometimes up to two years.

Patients should consult with medical professionals to discuss their desired results and determine which dermal filler, or dermal filler combination, will work best.

  • 03. How Long Does Restylane® Last?

The length of time a patient needs to wait between Restylane® treatments varies based on the areas of the body that were treated.

For example, Restylane® can last up to 18 months in the nasolabial folds (around the nose), 12 months in the cheeks and around the mouth, and six months in the back of the hands and lips.

  • 04.What is Restylane® Best For?

The purpose of Restylane® is to restore volume to the skin in areas where fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging have appeared over time. Patients can choose to use Restylane® across all areas of the face, along with lip fillers, or on the back of the hands to smooth wrinkles.

  • 05.Is Restylane® Better Than Botox®?

Botox®, also known as botulinum toxin type A, is a type of injectable muscle relaxer that helps smooth wrinkles by slowing down and preventing repetitive movements that can aggravate and increase the appearance of wrinkles.

Restylane® is a dermal filler that works to add volume to the skin by replacing naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. The two treatments complement, rather than replace, each other and are often combined to help patients achieve their desired results.

  • 06. What Should You Not Do After Restylane®?

Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal filler that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is safe for most individuals to use. However, patients need to follow a few best practices after treatment to maximize the effects and minimize the discomfort following a Restylane® treatment.

These steps include limiting sun exposure for about seven days after treatment, avoiding non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen), and resisting the urge to cover the injection site with makeup on the first day to minimize the risk of infection.

  • 07.What Are the Side Effects of Restylane®?

As with any type of injection, the most common side effect of Restylane® treatment is swelling, bruising, and/or redness surrounding the injection site. This is generally mild and should subside in seven to 14 days, depending on the area injected.

Individual patients will experience side effects such as swelling and bruising differently, but can minimize this discomfort with simple steps, such as applying a cold compress to the injection area. If you’re worried about potential side effects from Restylane®, make sure to discuss it with your medical provider prior to treatment.

  • 08.How Much is a Syringe of Restylane®?

According to Restylane’s manufacturer, Galderma, the average cost of treatment varies, depending on the size of the syringe, the size of the areas targeted, the patient’s desired results, and the frequency of injections. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that the average cost of one syringe of Restylane ranges from $620.00 to 790.00

  • 09.How Does Restylane® Stay in Place?

During Restylane® treatment, trained medical staff will inject tiny amounts of the Restylane® solution into key areas of the skin using a very fine needle.

This targeted approach, which includes individual injections into the middle and deep layers of the skin, ensures that the hyaluronic acid solution in Restylane® immediately bonds to water molecules under the skin and remains in place.

  • 10.Does Restylane® Hurt?

Trained medical staff will administer Restylane® using ultra-fine needles. Like any injection procedure, there is the potential for pain during each injection; however, the small size of the needles helps mitigate that pain.

Patients may also request that providers administer a topical anesthetic prior to beginning the injection process.

  • 11.Where Do You Inject Restylane®?

The exact placement of the needles for Restylane® injections is quite precise and designed to hold the filler in the proper place and achieve the desired results.

In general, patients may opt to receive Restylane® injections in any area of the face where they want to increase volume and/or minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This includes the lips, mid and upper cheeks, around the eyes and mouth, and around the nose, in an area known as the nasolabial crease.
