Pre and Post Instructions

What Are Lip Fillers & How Do they Work?

At The Rejuva Center, we use dermal fillers to soften fine lines and wrinkles and add volume to your cheeks, lips, and other areas on your face. As the name implies, dermal fillers are injected just underneath the skin. They all have a gel-like consistency, but different types contain different ingredients, such as calcium hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid, and polylactic acid.

Lip fillers are dermal fillers that add volume and shape to your lips. Over time, your lips can lose volume for several reasons, including:

  • Genetics
  • Aging
  • Sun damage
  • Smoking

The types of fillers that we use for the lips include Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, and Restylane®. Lip injections with these fillers help restore your previous lip size or add a little more volume if that’s what you desire. Lip fillers can also help if your lips are asymmetrical — one lip is fuller than the other, for example. In most cases, lip injection treatments last for about 12 months.

Are Lip Fillers Right for Me?

If your lips are too thin or asymmetrical for your liking or you have fine lines around your mouth, lip fillers may be the ideal treatment for you. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations. This type of treatment can add volume to your lips and improve their shape, but it won’t change the appearance of your lips completely.

If you currently smoke, you’re not a suitable candidate for lip fillers. Smoking can affect your blood’s ability to clot, which can alter the texture of your lips. Oral herpes and certain medical conditions that affect your body’s ability to heal may also prevent you from being a suitable candidate. These conditions include:

  • Blood clotting disorders like sickle cell anemia
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Lupus

If you don’t have any contraindicative health conditions, lip fillers are safe and effective with little risk of side effects or complications. The FDA has approved this form of treatment for people 21 years of age and older. Although there is no upper age limit for lip fillers, most people who choose this option are 65 years old or younger.

What Can I Expect from Lip Filler Treatment?

Prior to receiving treatment, you will consult with one of our specialists to determine if one of our lip fillers is right for you. They will give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have before booking an appointment. If you decide to proceed with lip filler injections, you will then learn how to prepare for treatment and receive guidelines for post-procedure care. We will also take your photo and set up an appointment for treatment.

During Your Treatment

During your lip filler treatment, a specialist will clean your lips and apply a topical anesthetic to keep you comfortable. The doctor will inject filler into the areas discussed. This typically amounts to approximately one-fifth of a teaspoon, on average. An ice pack may be applied during the procedure to minimize swelling.

After Your Lip Filler Treatment

After your treatment, we will monitor you for about 15 minutes before you will be released to go home. Depending on your needs, the entire session may last from 30 minutes to two hours. When your procedure is complete, you can expect to see a difference right away.

Possible Side Effects & Following Treatment

If you experience a little pain, redness, or swelling, don’t be alarmed. These are common side effects that should resolve within a day or two. To treat mild pain and swelling at home, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. You may resume normal activity after your treatment. At your two-week follow-up appointment, we will check to ensure that you are healing properly. At that time, we may take another photo for a before-and-after comparison.

Although rare, some patients are unhappy with their lip filler results. If this happens to you, the treatment can be reversed with injections of an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which dissolves lip fillers.
