Hair loss is one of the most common and frustrating cosmetic issues affecting Americans today. In fact, androgenetic alopecia, also known as male (and female) pattern baldness, affects approximately 80 million Americans.

Understandably, finding a way to reverse hair loss and encourage hair growth is a primary concern for many individuals suffering from androgenetic alopecia or other forms of hair loss.

Many well-known and valid medical and surgical options for hair loss treatment exist. Of those options, microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic medical procedure that can help with hair loss.

The Rejuva Center at Williams has offered microneedling treatments in Albany, New York, for years, and we have extensive experience using this procedure to treat hair loss as well. Discover more about the microneedling process and how it can help treat hair loss and restore hair growth over time.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic skincare procedure that involves a medical professional using a special tool covered in fine, sterile needles to create micro punctures across the skin.

First developed in the 1990s for treating acne scars, the needles only puncture the upper portion of the dermis of the skin, causing minimal pain and visible injury.

During the recovery phase, the body activates its immune system to produce collagen and elastin to heal the treated area(s). This has the effect of tightening skin and boosting volume, which can help fill in surface scars, including acne scars and stretch marks, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. This is certainly a bonus when considering the treatment.

How Microneedling for Hair Loss Works

Using microneedling to treat hair loss is the same as using it for cosmetic skincare. During the procedure, a medical professional uses a device with small needles to puncture the upper dermis of the skin to create micro injuries. This sets off a small immune response with the dual goal of stopping hair loss and stimulating hair growth over time.

When used for hair loss, our medical professionals concentrate on microneedling around the scalp in the areas where hair loss is most visible. Creating small punctures throughout the area, blood flow is stimulated and activates the body’s healing response, which has the effect of reducing hair loss.

In addition, when paired with a topical hair loss treatment like minoxidil (Rogaine) or a steroid cream, the small puncture wounds work harder to create micro channels that deliver the medication more effectively by allowing it to absorb faster. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that when combined with topical medical treatments, microneedling for hair loss significantly increased total hair count over time.

Who Can Benefit from Microneedling for Hair Loss

Many individuals can benefit from microneedling for hair loss; however, areas in the beginning stages of hair loss will see the most significant improvements. Most of the time, individuals who have lost all the hair in a particular area see less improvement.

At its most effective, microneedling for hair loss works best around the fine, miniature hairs (or “baby” hairs) that are ready to fall out. Microneedling treatments help fortify those hair follicles, while topical treatments can help the hairs grow back fuller and thicker over time.
